Sthira and Sukha – Alertness, Endurance, and Comfort on the Mat and in our Lives: Sunday 17 March at Laughing Dog Yoga, Wellesley, MA

In many ways, our yoga practice is the pursuit of comfort.  Through challenging asana and the practice of paying attention, we are required to be alert while building endurance. Meeting and confronting the challenge allows us to access greater physical comfort on our mat and mental clarity in our lives.

Patanjali coined the ancient notion that yoga comprises sthira and sukha, a balance of alert vigilance and ease.  Join Peter as we practice poses and breathwork that require attention and build endurance in order to arrive at a greater sense of overall comfort. This all-levels practice will reveal a stronger yet softer version of you!

Core Vinyasa: More than a Crunch: Saturday 5 October at The Yoga Tree, Haverhill, MA

The word “core” implies a yoga experience that will inevitably comprise the abdominal crunch. In actuality, “core” refers to the central trunk of the body, from the base of the pelvis to the top of the head. While crunches do effectively wake up and strengthen the layers of muscle in the abdominal wall, yoga asana offers more opportunity for core opening and strengthening. In this challenging but accessible sequence, we will deconstruct the sun salutation as well as widely practiced standing poses and arm balances. We will challenge the implication that a strengthening core practice needs to be a crunch practice.

The Solar Plexus: Balancing the Third Chakra with Asana and Pranyama: Saturday 13 October at Dancing Crow Yoga, Hingham, MA

The Solar plexus consists of a complex network of muscle tissue and nerve endings housed at the center of the body’s core. Corresponding to the location of the third chakra, midway between the base of the ribcage and the navel, the solar plexus governs aspects of both physical and emotional well-being. The third chakra is associated with our gut instincts, our sense of personal power, as well as our ability to concentrate and make decisions. Through diet and postural habits, this area can become stuck or shut down. When we are not in balance, physical processes such as digestion and emotional issues related to our self esteem are affected. By stimulation and balancing the energy at the solar plexus, you can assuredly step into a place of personal power and well-being. Join Peter for an asana and pranayama sequence designed to bring the solar plexus into balance. All levels welcome.

Hip and Hamstring Therapy and Hinging at the Hip Crease: Saturday 19 May at The Yoga Tree in Haverhill, MA

Do you suffer from chronic tightness in your hips and thighs?  Is it difficult to sit unsupported in a comfortable cross-legged position? Does the term “flat back” as it refers to forward folds continuously elude you? Through a series of both restorative and active asana, you will learn to ignite strength in your legs and abdomen to reduce holding and tension in your hips and hamstrings.  We will look at the natural pelvic “hinge” located at our hip crease to effectively create longer more supple leg muscles and safer poses for the back and spine.
